How to Start (and Grow) Your Podcast: Part 2

Part 2: Don’t Overthink the Gear

Welcome back to the Podcast Starter Series from Turn Up Studios! If you missed Part 1: Know Your Why, we broke down the importance of identifying your podcast’s purpose before you even press record. Now, let’s talk about something that trips up a lot of new podcasters:

Podcasting equipment or… the gear.

The internet makes it sound like you need a full-blown studio, boom arms, mixers, and $5,000 microphones just to get started. The truth is? You don’t always need all of that. What you need is clarity, consistency and gear that fits your goals and budget.

As a full-service podcast studio based in Panama City, we work with creators from Tallahassee to Pensacola who are just getting started. So in Part 2, we’re breaking down exactly what you need (and don’t need) when it comes to podcast equipment.

The Podcast Starter Series:

  1. Know Your Why – define the purpose behind your podcast (Get a refresher)
  2. Don’t Overthink the Gear – simple tips for choosing the right equipment (You are here!)
  3. Plan Your First 5 Episodes – build momentum with intention (coming soon to screens near you)
  4. Show Up Consistently – why reliability earns listeners
  5. Promote It Like You Mean It – growing your podcast the smart way

Step 1: Start Simple (You Really Don’t Need That $400 Mic)

If you’re wondering how to record a podcast at home, you only need three things to start:

  • A decent microphone
  • Headphones (so you’re not echoing through your speakers)
  • Recording software  (free options exist)

You can absolutely start with a USB mic like the Blue Yeti, Samson Q2U, or Audio-Technica ATR2100x. These plug directly into your laptop, sound solid, and are great for beginners. And guess what? Many of our clients at Turn Up Studios used these mics long before stepping into the studio.

Recording Tip: Don’t record directly into Zoom or your phone voice memos. Use free tools like Audacity, GarageBand, or Riverside.fm for better audio quality and easier editing.

Step 2: Know When It’s Time to Upgrade

You can launch from home, but when your show starts gaining traction, or you want that next-level sound from the start, that’s when a professional podcast studio becomes a game changer.

At Turn Up Studios, we help podcasters throughout Northwest Florida upgrade their content without breaking the bank. Here’s what you get with a pro setup:

  • Soundproof recording rooms — no more background noise from your dog or neighbor’s lawnmower
  • Studio-quality mics (Shure SM7B, Rode PodMic, etc.)
  • Producer support — someone to handle levels, editing, and sound quality
  • Video capabilities — record clips for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram Reels
  • A creative environment — sometimes, you just need a space that inspires

Whether you’re in Panama City Beach, Destin, Pensacola, Niceville, or somewhere in between, we’ve got flexible booking and tech support to help your podcast shine.

Step 3: Focus on Content First

We say this all the time, and it’s worth repeating: Your content matters more than your gear. Listeners will forgive a little echo or background noise if what you’re saying is valuable, entertaining, or different.

Spend your energy on:

  • Writing a strong episode outline
  • Practicing your intro and outro
  • Engaging with your guests or audience
  • Creating something people actually want to hear

Your gear can evolve as your podcast grows (but we can here to help with growth, too), just don’t let tech be the thing that stops you from starting.

Real Talk from the Studio

We’ve seen creators delay launching their show for months because they were stuck in the gear spiral. Don’t do that. We’ve got your back. You can record your first episode in our Panama City podcast studio without owning a single piece of equipment.

Just bring yourself and your idea. We’ll help with the rest.

TL;DR – Don’t Let Gear Be Your Excuse

To start a podcast, you need:

  • A mic (USB is fine to begin)
  • A quiet space
  • Recording software
  • The guts to actually start

Everything else can come later. And when you’re ready to sound like a pro from the jump, Turn Up Studios is ready to help.

Coming Up Next in Part 3: Plan Your First 5 Episodes – how to create structure, momentum, and a content plan that keeps your audience coming back.
