How to Start (and Grow) Your Podcast: A Super Helpful Series

Part 1: Know Your Why

Welcome to the Podcast Starter Series by Turn Up Studios based in Panama City, Florida: your all-in-one guide for launching, recording, and growing a successful podcast. If you’ve ever Googled something like “how to start a podcast” or “where can I record a podcast near me?”, this one’s for you.

As a full-service podcast studio in Bay County, we’ve worked with creators across Northwest Florida, from Tallahassee to Pensacola, and one thing we’ve seen time and time again is this: the people who succeed aren’t just the ones with fancy gear, they’re the ones who start with purpose.

So before we talk about equipment, formats, or promotion strategies, we’re kicking this series off with the most important piece of the puzzle.

Turn Up’s Podcast Starter Series:

  1. Know Your Why – define the purpose behind your podcast (you are here!)
  2. Don’t Overthink the Gear – smart, affordable setup tips (coming up next…)
  3. Plan Your First 5 Episodes – strategy before spontaneity
  4. Show Up Consistently – why a schedule matters more than you think
  5. Promote It Like You Mean It – how to market your show and grow your audience

This is Part 1: Know Your Why.

Why Your Podcast Needs a Purpose Before It Has a Mic

If you’re trying to figure out how to start a podcast, it’s easy to get distracted by the tech side of things. What mic should I buy? What platform should I use? Do I need editing software?

Take a beet (we’re punny around here).

Before you hit record, ask yourself one simple but powerful question:

Why am I doing this podcast?

It sounds basic, but this one decision lays the foundation for everything else, from how you record and what you say to how people find and connect with your show.

What’s Your “Why”?

Here at Turn Up Studios, we help creators from all over Northwest Florida define their voice and build a show that sticks, with an audience that sticks around. Your “why” might look like:

  • Building a personal or professional brand
  • Creating a platform to educate or inspire a specific audience
  • Sharing conversations and stories that matter to your community
  • Building buzz around your business, book, or service
  • Starting a fun, creative outlet to explore your passions

There’s no wrong answer but there is power in clarity. Once you identify your purpose, your decisions as a podcast creator and host become a whole lot easier.

How Your Purpose Shapes Your Podcast

Knowing why you’re podcasting gives direction to every part of the process. Here’s how:

  • Your Format: Will you be flying solo, hosting guests, doing interviews, or recording roundtable-style convos? Your purpose will help guide what structure makes sense.
  • Your Voice + Style: Are you aiming for laid-back and conversational? Educational and expert-driven? Raw and unfiltered? Your “why” should influence the tone you set.
  • Your Audience: Who are you talking to? What do they care about? Your purpose helps you define and reach the right listeners, whether they’re in Panama City, Pensacola, Destin, or even halfway across the world.
  • Your Brand: Podcast name, logo, colors, music; all of that branding flows from a clear mission. You’re not just making noise. You’re creating something meaningful.

Real Talk: This Is What Keeps You Going

Starting a podcast is exciting. Keeping one going? That’s where most people get discouraged. But when you’ve got a strong “why” at the center of it all, it’s easier to keep showing up even when the downloads are slow, the schedule gets tight, or the perfectionism kicks in.

We see it all the time at our podcast recording studio in Panama City, and it’s part of why we always encourage clients, whether they’re coming from Tallahassee, Fort Walton, or Pensacola, to take this step seriously before diving into the tech.

Quick Tip from the Studio: Write Your Why Down

Put it in your notes app. On a sticky note by your mic. In big letters on your bathroom mirror. Keep it in your line of sight. When things start to feel off, come back to your why and realign from there.
